Things to do in the Itria Valley: some of the best places to visit.

The Itria Valley lies in the heart of Apulia. This area is home to charming villages, historic towns, wooded hills, vineyards, and miles and miles of olive groves, as well as the iconic trulli. These traditional stone houses are the first things that will catch your eye as you travel through the region—they give the valley an almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere. Halfway between the Ionian and the Adriatic seas, where the Murge plateau ends, lies Locorotondo overlooking the little green slightly-hilly Itria Valley.

The white town of Locorotondo is considered the most beautiful balcony overlooking the Murgia dei Trulli. Its typical sloping roofs, made of grey chiancarelle (small stone slabs), known as cummèrse, stand out against the white façades of the houses, whose interiors feature barrel-vaulted ceilings.

The town, which was awarded the orange flag by the Italian Touring Club, preserves an historical center made oftrulli, buildings erected with dry stone featuring lime-washed walls and a cone-shaped roof built exposed stones. The top of these particular buildings are often decorated with inscriptions of different shapes painted with lime water and depicting zodiacal or religious symbols.
